What a mirror coating is
A mirrored lens is an ordinary tinted lens with a thin reflective layer on the front surface. The layer bounces part of the incoming light away, so less reaches the eye. Two consequences:
- The lens can be lighter than it appears. From the outside a silver mirror looks opaque; from the inside it is a normal grey or brown view, often a shade lighter than a solid dark lens.
- Less light, less squint. On snow, water, sand or a long drive into the sun, the extra reduction is noticeable. This is why mirrored lenses started in sport and aviation.
What the coating is not. It is not polarization: a mirror reduces the total light, a polarizing filter removes the reflected glare that comes off flat surfaces, and a lens can have both or either. The polarized versus non polarized guide explains the difference. And it is not UV protection: the UV block comes from the lens material and coating underneath, not the mirror; every MUJOSH sunglass lens is UV400 whether or not it is mirrored, and the UV400 guide covers the label.
Mirrored, gradient or solid: which lens for which day
- Solid tint. Even darkness across the lens. The all rounder for bright sun.
- Gradient. Dark at the top, lighter at the bottom. The city lens: it cuts overhead sun and lets you read a phone or a menu through the lower half, and it shows the eyes, which is why it photographs well. Gradient sunglasses are the choice if you keep sunglasses on indoors or at a table.
- Mirrored. The most light reduction for the lens darkness, and the most privacy. The lens for snow, water, long drives and anyone who does not want their eyes read. It shows nothing, so it reads as cool or guarded depending on the face.
Most wardrobes want a gradient for the city and either a solid or a mirror for the strong sun days.
Who mirrored sunglasses suit
The mirror draws the eye to the lens, so the frame shape has to be one you would wear anyway. Three notes:
- Face shape rules do not change. Aviators for square and heart shaped faces, squares for round faces, cat eyes for round and oval faces. The mirror just makes the choice more visible.
- Colouring. A silver mirror suits cool and fair colouring and anything grey, navy or black. A gold or bronze mirror suits warm skin and brown or camel clothes. A blue mirror is a sport signal and suits very few outfits off the beach.
- The frame should be quiet. A mirrored lens in a metal or crystal frame reads sleek; a mirrored lens in a thick bright acetate frame reads loud. If you want to wear mirrors to the office, choose a thin metal frame and a silver mirror.
Where mirrored lenses are the wrong choice
At a table with people, because they cannot see your eyes and conversation suffers. In photographs where you want to be seen, because the lens reflects the photographer. And for anyone who is hard on sunglasses, because the coating is on the front surface and scratches show more than they do on a plain lens.
How to care for a mirror coating
The reflective layer sits on the outside, so it takes every wipe. Rinse with lukewarm water before wiping to lift grit, wash with a drop of dish soap and your fingers, dry with a clean microfibre cloth, and never use a shirt, a tissue or an alcohol wipe. Keep them in the case, lens up, and out of hot cars, where heat stresses the coating. The how to clean eyeglasses guide has the routine, and it applies to mirrored lenses with more force than to any other.
MUJOSH mirrored sunglasses
Six colourways in the sunglasses collection carry a mirror coating, verified from the product photos.
- Lvy in WS, $99: a cream narrow cat eye in lightweight TR90 with a silver mirror lens, cut for a lower nose bridge. The mirror as a fashion statement.
- Dixrea in STS, $99: a grey crystal acetate square with a silver mirror polarized lens, cut for a lower nose bridge. Mirror and polarization together, for water and roads.
- Geometric Polygon in SS, $119: a hexagonal metal aviator with a silver mirror lens, cut for a lower nose bridge. The angular version.
- Aviator Total in MSPG, $99: a classic metal aviator with a silver mirror lens, adjustable nose pads and a lower bridge cut. The original mirrored shape; the aviator collection has the rest.
- Stylish in GDS, $135: an oversized thin metal square with a silver mirror lens, cut for a lower nose bridge. Coverage with a mirror; the oversized collection has the family.
- Futuristic in AGWM, $159: a grey crystal square in TR90 with a light mirror lens. The subtle mirror, for people who want the effect at half strength.
For the gradient side, Maga KC in BBB carries a blue gradient polarized lens at $79, and Oatt Fold comes with a blue or a pink gradient lens in a folding frame at $149. The polarized pairs are in the polarized collection.
Fit
A mirrored lens shows a crooked frame instantly, because the reflection tilts with it. The frame has to sit level and stay at the height it was drawn for. Many of our frames are cut for a lower nose bridge so they rest on the nose rather than the cheeks, and the metal frames carry adjustable nose pads.
Two care guides for a mirrored lens: the scratched glasses guide on why a scratch through the mirror layer cannot be polished out, and the microfiber cloth guide on the rinse first routine that stops the scratches happening.
The blue mirror is the most worn of them, and the blue sunglasses guide covers it beside the blue gradient and navy.
A mirror can sit on a gradient as well as a solid lens; the gradient sunglasses guide covers the fade and the gradient mirror in the range.
The bottom line
A mirror coating reflects part of the light before the tint absorbs the rest, which makes mirrored sunglasses the most comfortable lens in very bright conditions and the most private. Choose a silver mirror for cool colouring and a quiet frame, a gradient for the city, and remember that the coating sits on the front surface and needs washing, not wiping. The six MUJOSH pairs above cover the aviator, the square and the cat eye.
The silver mirror is the most reflective of the mirror colours; the silver sunglasses guide covers it alongside the silver frame.
The mirrored aviator is the first of the five eighties looks in the 80s sunglasses guide.
The mirror is the festival lens above all others; the festival sunglasses guide covers the rest of the weekend.
The blue mirror has its own piece: the blue lens sunglasses guide covers what the colour does and does not do.
Frequently asked questions
What is the point of mirrored sunglasses?
The mirror coating reflects part of the light before it reaches the tint, so the lens is more comfortable in very bright sun and hides the eyes. It started in sport and aviation for that reason.
Are mirrored sunglasses polarized?
Not automatically. A mirror reduces total light; a polarizing filter removes glare reflected off flat surfaces. Some lenses have both, such as the Dixrea STS; check the product page.
Do mirrored sunglasses scratch easily?
The coating is on the front surface, so scratches show more than on a plain lens. Rinse before wiping, use a microfibre cloth, avoid alcohol wipes, and keep them in the case.
What is the difference between mirrored and gradient sunglasses?
A mirrored lens reflects light evenly across the lens and hides the eyes. A gradient lens is dark at the top and lighter at the bottom, shows the eyes and lets you read a phone through the lower half.
Mirrored or polarized sunglasses: which is better?
They do different jobs and a lens can be both. A mirror is a coating on the outside of the lens that reflects light away and hides the eyes; it reduces brightness and changes the look. Polarized is a filter inside the lens that blocks glare off flat surfaces such as roads and water; it changes what you see. For driving, water and long days outside, polarized is the one that matters; a mirror is a style choice on top. In the MUJOSH range Maga KC in BBB is both, a blue gradient mirror on a polarized lens; the polarized versus non polarized guide covers the filter.
Are mirrored sunglasses in style in 2026?
Yes, worn with restraint. A mirror reads current on a simple shape: a silver or blue mirror on a thin metal frame, or a soft flash mirror on a plain square or cat eye. On a shape that is already loud, a full mirror is one statement too many, which the sunglasses trends 2026 guide covers. Pick one loud element, not two.
